Microsoft (MSFT, Financials) President Brad Smith has called on President-elect Donald Trump to intensify measures against cyberattacks originating from Russia, China, and Iran, according to the Financial Times.
Smith underlined the need of tackling initiatives financed by states aiming at U.S. officials and elections.
Smith urged the next government to send a strong message to discourage such assaults and underlined the importance of cybersecurity to become a main emphasis of international relations. He observed that even if the Biden government is improving cybersecurity defenses, further actions are required to deter nation-state intrusions.
According to Microsoft's own statistics, its users go through approximately 600 million cyberattacks per day, including state-sponsored entities working on operations and resource sharing alongside criminal organizations.
Talking on how a Trump presidency may affect the IT industry, Smith said it is too early to say any major impact will result. Any relaxation of U.S. merger and acquisition rules should be evaluated in relation to world norms, he said.
Following recent export restrictions on artificial intelligence chips imposed by the Biden government, Smith also advised the United States to help the transfer of American digital technology to areas such the Middle East and Africa. He underlined the need of developing consistent procedures to let American technology compete internationally.
