Walmart (WMT) remains focused on ensuring employees at its stores are well taken care of in the wake of two tragic shootings this past week.
The world’s largest retailer has not made any changes to its firearm sales policy following the latest incident, a Walmart spokesperson told Yahoo Finance. Walmart continues to sell firearms in some 50% of its 4,300-plus U.S. stores.
Walmart took a strong stance on firearms in 2015, banning assault rifles. The company requires background checks for customers who buy guns. And last year, the company raised the age limit to purchase a firearm to 21 from 18.
The spokesperson told Yahoo Finance that Walmart has also not changed its current security protocol. Employees are able to take a once a quarter class that helps them deal with active shooter situations. It’s unclear what next steps Walmart will take on the matter of gun sales and security.
Last year, Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS) announced that it would halt the sale of certain semi-automatic firearms at its 35 Field & Stream stores and namesake stores after the fatal shootings in Sandy Hook. That decision hit the retailer’s stock and continues to have a negative impact on its earnings results.
