Investors will have plenty of data to consider this week, with a slew of third-quarter earnings as well as key economic reports ready to drop. Some of the companies reporting are UNH, JNJ, BAC, GS, C, RIO, PNC, ASML, ABT, PLD, USB, CSX, TSM, NFLX, MS, ISRG, ELV, MMM, BK, PG, AXP, and SLB. On Wednesday, the September Import Price Index hits the tape, while Thursday brings September Retail Sales and Industrial Production, and Friday features Housing Starts. The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrials, and S&P 400 all finished last week at all-time highs (ATHs), while the Nasdaq and the Nasdaq 100 are within a couple percentage points. The S&P 600 (SML) and the Russell 2000 (IWM) continued higher, with SML 4% below its 11/2021 ATH and the IWM 5% below its 2021 high. The large indices all have crawled higher since early September and, bullishly, since last November have been trading mostly between the 20-week average (middle band) and the upper weekly Bollinger Band. Last week was risk-on, as Information Technology rose 2.5%, led by semis but with IT strength broad and across many industries. Both Industrials and Financials rose 2% for the week and also displayed broad industry strength. Healthcare added 1.5%, and Materials was up 0.8%. The Utilities sector was at the bottom, falling 2.5% as interest rates pushed higher. This was the sector's fourth weekly loss in the past 15 weeks. If we combine the Stock Charts Technical Rank and the Bullish Percent Index (BPI), the strongest sectors overall are Financials and Utilities, which are tied for first, while third place goes to Industrials. At the bottom are Energy, Consumer Staples, and Healthcare. (Mark Arbeter, CMT)
